Week 14 of 20
September 8, 2026
Corn week, finally. Also: the garlic is cured and the fall carrots are sweetening.
Full share this week
- Sweet corn (6 ears)
- Slicing tomatoes (3 lb)
- Sungolds (pint)
- Basil
- Cucumbers (3)
- Green beans (1 lb)
- Bell peppers (3)
- Cured garlic (2)
- Carrots (bunch)
- Delicata (2)
Half shares: 4 ears, 2 lb tomatoes, no delicata this week.
We held the corn back a week because the first planting was patchy and we wanted every ear in the box to be a good one. The Montauk came in Monday morning and it is as good as we have grown it. Eat it this week; it does not keep. If you want more, it is $7 a dozen at the stand and we will have it for about three weeks.
The delicata is the first of the winter squash. It needs no peeling. The basil is big this week because the plants are starting to flower and we cut hard; make pesto and freeze it in an ice-cube tray.
Field notes: we got 2.1 inches of rain Thursday night, which was more than we wanted but it came slow. The fall brassicas (broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels) are sizing up nicely for late September. The last succession of lettuce went in under shade cloth and should make it into the box by week 17.
Corn, tomato and basil salad
Cut the kernels off 4 raw ears. Toss with a pint of halved Sungolds, a handful of torn basil, 2 tablespoons of good olive oil, a squeeze of lime and plenty of salt. Let it sit 20 minutes. That is the whole recipe. Add feta if you have it.
Week 13 of 20
September 1, 2026
Peak tomato. Twenty-pound boxes of Romas are on the pre-order form.
Full share this week
- Slicing tomatoes (4 lb)
- Roma tomatoes (2 lb)
- Eggplant (2)
- Peppers, sweet (3)
- Jalapeños (3)
- Zucchini (2)
- Yellow onions (2)
- Cilantro
- Watermelon (1)
- Kale (bunch)
Half shares: 3 lb slicers, no Romas, one eggplant.
This is the heaviest box of the year, so bring a second bag. The tomatoes are a mix of Big Beef, Cherokee Purple and Brandywine. The purple ones are ugly on top and best in the middle; cut around the shoulders. Do not refrigerate any of them.
If you can, this is the week to put up sauce. The bulk Romas are $45 for 20 pounds on the stand page, which makes about 7 quarts. Order by Sunday for Thursday pickup.
Field notes: we pulled the last of the cucumbers Saturday; the vines had downy mildew and it was time. Planted the overwintering spinach in the high tunnel. The hens moved to the field behind the squash, which means the eggs will go a little darker-yolked for a few weeks.
Eggplant and pepper agrodolce
Cube the eggplant, salt it 20 minutes, pat dry. Fry in olive oil until brown. Add sliced peppers and onion, cook soft. Add 3 tablespoons vinegar, 1 tablespoon honey, a chopped tomato; simmer 10 minutes. Eat warm on bread or cold the next day, which is better.
Week 12 of 20
August 25, 2026
Green beans by the pound, the first eggplant, and a note about the heat.
Full share this week
- Green beans (1.5 lb)
- Slicing tomatoes (3 lb)
- Sungolds (pint)
- Eggplant (1)
- Cucumbers (3)
- Summer squash (3)
- New potatoes (2 lb)
- Fresh onions (2)
- Dill
- Lettuce (1 head, small)
Half shares: 1 lb beans, 2 lb tomatoes, no potatoes.
Four days over 92 and the lettuce is showing it. The head in your box is smaller than we would like. We thought about leaving it out and decided a small one was better than none. Eat it first.
The green beans are Provider and Maxibel. The skinny ones are the Maxibel; they are a French filet bean and they are the best thing in the box. Blanch for two minutes and dress them while warm.
Field notes: the crew harvested 1,140 pounds of tomatoes this week, a record for week 12. Thank you to the four worker-share members who came in at 6 instead of 6:30 to beat the heat. The flower add-on is at its peak; the dahlias started last week.
Potatoes, beans and dill
Boil the new potatoes whole, skins on, until tender. Blanch the beans. Toss both with butter, a lot of chopped dill, the sliced fresh onion and salt. This is dinner with a fried egg on top.
Week 11 of 20
August 18, 2026
The garlic harvest is in. Also melons, and a word on what to do with chard.
Full share this week
- Fresh garlic (2)
- Slicing tomatoes (2 lb)
- Sungolds (pint)
- Cucumbers (3)
- Zucchini (3)
- Sweet peppers (2)
- Carrots (bunch)
- Chard (bunch)
- Cantaloupe (1)
- Basil
Half shares: 1 garlic, 1.5 lb tomatoes, 2 cucumbers.
We pulled 4,200 heads of garlic last week over two mornings and they are hanging in the barn now. The two in your box are fresh, uncured: juicier, milder, and they will not keep past a couple of weeks. Cured garlic for storage will be in the box from week 14 on.
The cantaloupe is a variety called Sarah's Choice and it is ready when the stem end smells like cantaloupe. If yours is firm, leave it on the counter a day or two.
Field notes: fall carrots and beets are up. We seeded the last of the fall turnips and radishes. The high tunnel tomatoes are winding down and the field tomatoes are taking over, which is why the slicers look different this week.
Chard, two ways
Strip the leaves and chop the stems separately. Stems: sauté in olive oil with garlic 5 minutes, then add the leaves and a splash of water, cover 3 minutes. Finish with lemon. Or: chop stems fine, pickle them in the cucumber brine you have left over. They turn pink.
Week 10 of 20
August 11, 2026
Halfway. Sweet peppers start, the broccoli finishes, and a thank-you.
Full share this week
- Broccoli (1 head)
- Cabbage (1)
- Slicing tomatoes (2 lb)
- Sungolds (pint)
- Cucumbers (2)
- Zucchini (2)
- Sweet peppers (2)
- Carrots (bunch)
- Beets (bunch)
- Parsley
Half shares: no cabbage, 1.5 lb tomatoes.
Ten weeks in, ten to go. By our tally the full share has had $486 of produce at stand prices so far, against the $720 you paid; the back half of the season is heavier, so the usual pattern holds. The second half is tomatoes, corn, peppers, potatoes and squash: the things with weight.
This is the last of the summer broccoli. The fall planting comes in late September. The cabbage is a small pointed one called Caraflex that is good raw.
Field notes: Dan got the fall cover crop seeded in the spring brassica ground (oats and peas). Nora and the crew trellised the last of the tomatoes. Thank you to everyone who came to the member potluck Sunday; 61 people, no leftovers.
Beet and carrot slaw
Grate 2 beets and 3 carrots. Dress with 2 tablespoons cider vinegar, 1 tablespoon olive oil, a teaspoon of honey, salt, and a handful of chopped parsley. Keeps four days and gets better.
