What a CSA is, in one minute

You pay for the season in spring. We feed you from it all summer.

CSA stands for community supported agriculture. You buy a share of the harvest before the season starts, which pays for seed, soil amendments and the crew's first paychecks when there's nothing to sell yet. In return you get a box of whatever is at its best every week from early June to late October, at a price below what the same produce costs at the stand.

A full share feeds a household of three or four that cooks most nights. A half share suits a couple, or a family that eats out a lot. If you're unsure, start with a half; you can buy extra at the stand any day of the week.

The trade-off is honest: a late frost or a wet June means a lighter box some weeks. In nine seasons we have never missed a pickup, and the full-share value has landed between $860 and $940 at stand prices every year.

Week 14: corn's in, garlic's cured, the fall brassicas are sizing up.

We picked the first of the Montauk sweet corn Monday and it will be in every box and on the stand through the end of the month. The garlic hung in the barn for six weeks and is now trimmed, graded and in a crate by the stand door, $2 a head or $18 for ten. Tomatoes are at full tilt; if you want 20 pounds of Romas for sauce, order on the stand page and we'll have them boxed Thursday.

Fall shares open October 1. The storage share is 60 pounds of potatoes, onions, squash, carrots, beets and cabbage picked up in one trip in early November. It sold out in 11 days last year.
