Questions

Things people ask, answered straight.

If yours isn't here, ask us. If three people ask the same thing, it goes on this page.

The CSA

Which share size should I get?

A half share is right for one or two people, or a family that eats out a few nights a week. A full share suits three or four people who cook most nights, or two people who freeze and can. If you're new to CSAs, start with a half; you can upgrade until June 1 and buy extra at the stand with your 10% member discount any day.

Can I choose what goes in the box?

Mostly no. You get what's at its best that week, which is the point. Two things help: every farm pickup has a swap bin where you can trade one item for another, and the weekly update tells you on Monday what's coming so you can plan. If there's something you never want (cilantro is the usual one), tell us at signup and we'll swap it out for you at the farm sites.

What if I'm away for a week?

Each share includes one vacation hold: email us by the Sunday before and we donate your box to the Viroqua food pantry. You can also have a friend pick it up; just tell us their name. We don't double up boxes the following week because the vegetables don't work that way.

What happens if I forget to pick up?

Boxes left at the farm sites go into the walk-in until Friday morning, then to the pantry. At the markets and Westby, anything uncollected by closing goes to the pantry the same day. We'll text you once at closing time. No refunds for missed weeks, sorry; the food was grown and picked.

Is the share worth it compared to the stand?

Yes, by design. We track every box at stand prices. Full-share value has come in between $860 and $940 each of the last five seasons against the $720 price, and half shares between $500 and $545 against $420. The back half of the season is heavier than the front; don't judge it in June.

Do you ever have a bad year?

We've had a hailstorm (2020) and a drought (2021). Both years the boxes were lighter for three or four weeks and we bought in a few things from neighboring organic farms, labelled as such, to fill the gap. We have never missed a pickup or shortened a season. The risk you take on with a CSA is real but, nine seasons in, it's been small.

Paying

What are the payment options?

Pay in full on confirmation, four payments March through June, or six monthly payments March through August. No fees for any plan. We take check, card (3% fee for the card, which we cover) and EBT. Nothing is charged when you reserve; we email a payment link after we confirm your pickup site.

How does SNAP / EBT work for the CSA?

We swipe your EBT card at pickup for that week's portion of the share, every week or every other week. Through the Partner Shares fund, SNAP, WIC and income-qualified households pay 50% of the share price; the fund pays the rest. Tick the box on the signup form and we'll send the one-page application. At the stand and markets, SNAP is accepted at the kiosk and the booth, and Market Match doubles your first $20 of produce each visit.

Can I get a refund if I move or change my mind?

Before June 1, yes, in full. After the season starts we'll refund the remaining weeks minus a $50 administrative fee if we can fill your spot from the waitlist, which we usually can. We'd rather you transfer the share to a friend; that's free.

Pickup

Can I switch pickup sites?

For a single week, email by Sunday night and we'll send your box wherever you need it. Permanently, yes, any time there's room at the new site. The Westby site has a twelve-share minimum, so it stays open as long as it stays above that.

What should I bring to pickup?

A bag or box. At the farm sites the vegetables are in a reusable crate that stays with us; you transfer to your own bag. At the markets and Westby we pack in a kraft paper bag with your name on it. A cooler is smart in August if you're driving more than an hour.

Can someone else pick up for me?

Yes, any time. They tell us your name. You don't need to warn us.

The farm

What does "certified organic" mean here?

An inspector walks the farm every summer and audits three years of records: what we planted, what seed, what we put on the soil, what we sprayed and when. No synthetic fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides; no GMO seed; buffers from neighbors who spray. In practice we use far less than certification allows: two approved sprays, a total of three applications, in 2025. The whole accounting is on the practices page.

Are the eggs organic?

The hens eat certified-organic feed and live on certified-organic pasture, but we haven't certified the eggs, because the paperwork and feed audit would push them to about $9 a dozen. They're $6. Same hens either way.

Can I visit the farm?

The stand is open daily and the path to the high tunnel is yours to walk. Farm tours are the first Saturday of June, July and September at 10 am; meet at the stand. Members' potluck is the second Sunday in August. The fields themselves are a working area with a crew and machinery, so please stay on the mowed paths unless you're on a tour.

Do you deliver to homes?

No. We looked at it and the math doesn't work for a farm our size without raising the share price $150. Four pickup sites across 36 miles is our answer. If there's real demand for a fifth site (twelve or more households in one place), tell us.

Can I buy a gift share?

Yes. Any share or add-on can be bought for someone else; put their name and email in the notes on the signup form and we'll send them a card and the pickup details. Half shares make the best gifts; a full share for someone who didn't ask for it is a lot of kale.

Ready?

Full shares: 11 left. Half shares: 23 left. Signup takes four minutes and nothing is charged until we confirm your pickup site.
